CH: Goalkeepers face the impossible

Quebec’s Samuel Montembeault faced 40 shots from the New Jersey Devils on Tuesday but still let the Montreal Canadiens win 5-2. And this situation has not been an isolated case for CH since the beginning of the campaign.

Indeed, the Habs goalkeepers are doing well despite the difficult task ahead.

“It is important to underline this,” stressed journalist Renaud Lavoie on Wednesday’s broadcast JiC at TVA Sports. We look a lot at stats, average, percentage of efficiency on shots, (because) these are stats that are readily available. All NHL goalie coaches have different ways of rating their goalies. Everyone has their own recipe.

“In the case of Samuel Montembeault, even when he loses, he tends to find himself on the right side of the coin.”

And the Bleu-Blanc-Rouge is among the teams to give away the highest quality chances in 2022-2023.

“When we’re having fun, the scoring chances are very high quality for the Canadiens goalies, the Ducks goalies got 650,” Lavoie said. Those of the Islanders, 600. The Coyotes and Canadians, 594 since the beginning of the season.

“Samuel (Montembeault) was just sensational yesterday. He had a good ten of these very valuable chances. We cannot criticize Samuel Montembeault since the beginning of the season. Yes, he had some games that were a bit more difficult than others. But there are circumstances that explain how the defense of this team is full of young people.
