Canadian Foreign Ministry targeted by cyberattack

LCanada's Department of Foreign Affairs was the target of a major cyberattack, the North American country's cybersecurity authorities confirmed on Monday, January 24. The attack, which occurred on Wednesday, January 19, is significant: part of the ministry premises was still inaccessible on Monday evening. In a press release, the Canadian Treasury Secretariat said online services for diplomats are among the features not yet available.

“At this time, there is no indication that other departments were affected by this incident,” also states the Canadian Ministry of Finance, which points out that “the Canadian government faces continuous and persistent cyber threats every day.” They “may result from system or application vulnerabilities or from deliberate, sustained and targeted attacks by external actors to gain access to information,” the press release continues.

Tensions around Ukraine are rising as the West believes Ukraine is at risk of Russian invasion. In recent days, Kiev claimed to have “evidence” of Moscow’s involvement in a large-scale cyberattack that targeted several Ukrainian government websites. The Kremlin has denied any Russian involvement.
