Apocalypse Survival: A Canadian Cities Ranking

MONTREAL – If a hypothetical zombie attack were to happen in Canada, it’s better not to be in Quebec if you want to survive. That’s according to an unscientific and rather hilarious study by real estate rental company Rentola, the results of which were published on Thursday.

Using data from Statistics Canada, which was then processed and converted to a scale of 10, Rentola created a list of 35 urban areas that she ranked according to their residents’ chances of survival in the event of an apocalypse.

Population density, prevalence of mental health problems in the population, average household size, proximity to parks, vacancy rate, crime rate per 100,000 inhabitants, number of crimes related to the illegal use or possession of firearms, different indices of mobility and the presence of natural resources such as water or plants were taken into account when creating the ranking.

This puts the urban regions of Trois-Rivières, Montreal, Sherbrooke and Saguenay in third, fourth, fifth and sixth place, respectively, among Canadian cities with the lowest chances of survival.

Conversely, no urban region in Quebec ranks among the top ten for survival. The Ottawa and Gatineau metropolitan area is at number 14, after which you need to drop ten places to find Greater Quebec City.

The safest communities nationally, according to the survey, are Edmonton, Alberta, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan and Guelph, Ontario.

Conversely, the least secure census area would be Saint John, New Brunswick, followed by Belleville, Ontario.
