Airbnb rentals could be approved in almost all of Sherbrooke

The planning commission intends to propose to the municipal council to ban this type of rental for second homes, with a few exceptions.

Commission President Geneviève La Roche judges that the scale of Airbnb by restricting rentals to primary residences will not lead to more nuisance in neighborhoods.

What we wanted to avoid at the Development Commission is that Airbnb could affect our rental portfolio because right now an owner can buy a building and rent it all on Airbnb when it could be apartments. But only if it is an owner-occupier who can rent out his apartment [principal]it has little impact on our rental portfolio because we have to live somewhereshe notices.

The other issue that concerned us at the Land Use Planning Commission was Airbnb harassment. But if it’s your primary residence, it’s your neighborhood, you went to Florida maybe two weeks, you rented your apartment, you don’t want to come back and have problems with your tenants or a trashed apartment. In the end we have a simplified management of nuisance because it’s really the people who live in a place who can rent.

The issue will soon have to be presented to the municipal council.
