Quebec’s Félix Auger-Aliassime meets a qualifying player in the first round of the United States Open, but his task could quickly become complicated if he wins.
Tournament organizers drew the men’s and women’s main draws on Thursday, and “FAA” could face world No. 1 Daniil Medvedev of Russia in the quarterfinals.
Before that possible appointment, however, there will be obstacles in his way. His second round duel will be against the British Jack Draper, quarterfinalist at the National Bank Open, or the Finn Emil Ruusuvuori, 44th in the world. Karen Khachanov, 31st ATP player, is one of his potential rivals.
Then, in his fourth confrontation, Auger-Aliassime, sixth seed, could face the champion of the last Montreal tournament, the Spaniard Pablo Carreno Busta, twelfth seed.
For his part, Canadian Denis Shapovalov has an appointment with Swiss Marc-Andrea Huesler, 102nd in the pros. If he wins, the Ontarian will face off against a Spaniard, Jaume Munar or Roberto Carballes Baena. In the same quarter as Rafael Nadal, “Shapo” could face Andrey Rublev in the third round.
A good course for Fernandez?
In the women’s, Quebec’s Leylah Annie Fernandez meets France’s Océane Dodin, 99th in the WTA, to start the competition. If they win, the 14th seeded will play Russia’s Liudmila Samsonova, ranked 45th in the world, or a qualifying opponent. Later, the second favorite, Estonian Anett Kontaveit, could stand in her way.
Ontarian Bianca Andreescu, champion in New York in 2019, will face Harmony Tan from France to start hostilities. If she has the 111th player on the circuit, the Canadian could cross swords with Brazilian Beatriz Haddad Maia (15th seed), a finalist in Toronto earlier this month, provided she has Croatia’s Ana Konjuh.
The third round would not be any easier for Andreescu, a clash with France’s Caroline Garcia, champion in Cincinnati a few days ago, appears among the possibilities.
The main field games begin on Monday.
