A new name for the Lou Marsh trophy

The Lou Marsh Trophy, awarded to Canada’s Sportsman of the Year for 86 years, will change his identity. The late sportswriter, who lends his name to this honor, is said to have made racist remarks throughout his career.

This was announced by the daily newspaper “Toronto Star”, which is responsible for awarding the trophy, on Monday.

“The original decision to honor Lou Marsh was made nearly 90 years ago,” noted Toronto newspaper editor Jordan Bitove. We are aware that in recent years concerns have been expressed about statements he made around the turn of the century.

“We will begin a process to choose a new name that better suits this historic trophy that has recognized Canada’s greatest athletes since 1936.”

The latest to receive this honor is decathlete Damian Warner. After accepting the trophy, he called for change.

“I don’t want to demonize a man or attack anyone who isn’t here to defend themselves,” he said. I believe he was saying things that are not consistent with Canadian values, even at the time he was making his comments.

“I’m definitely in favor of a name change.”
