A new measure comes into effect for the issuance of Canadian passports

The Government of Canada announces the enactment of a measure it hopes will ease part of the process of obtaining a Canadian passport.

Starting now, Canadians who submitted a completed application more than 20 business days ago and will be traveling within the next 20 business days can visit any of the 300+ Service Canada Centers to request a referral to ensure their application is processed in time for your journey.

Previously, Canadians could only request a transfer in person at one of the 35 passport offices or by contacting the call center. This change gives you an additional option to make this type of request.

Depending on the travel date, the application will be expedited and the passport will be mailed to the customer before the required date or the file will be sent to an office for printing and collection.

The government intends to reduce the number of file transfers processed by passport offices and minimize the burden of local printing. It expedites the processing of requests for which the standard of service has not been met.

Authorities say the offices should see further reductions in queues related to urgent applications at passport offices.

The government advises that proof of travel or necessity of travel is required. Additionally, if the request was mailed less than 20 days ago and an upcoming trip requires a wire transfer, wire transfer fees will apply and additional fees may apply.
