A defeat before the break

In their final game before a 10-day break, the Montreal Canadiens lost to the Pittsburgh Penguins 3-2 in overtime on Saturday night at PPG Paints Arena.

Defenseman Marcus Pettersson scored the winning goal for the home favorite on a two-on-one run, beating Jake Allen with a wrist shot. In doing so, the first city slowed down the sequence of three defeats in its creation.

The game started quite well for Martin St-Louis' men. After withstanding several Penguins attacks while outnumbered, Kaiden Guhle scored the first goal with assists from Mike Matheson and Cole Caufield. In addition, the latter collected at least one point for the ninth game in a row.

Nevertheless, former CH player Lars Eller grabbed a rebound on the occasion of his 1000th career game and equalized at the beginning of the second period. Thanks to Juraj Slafkovsky's seventh goal of the season, the guests took the lead again on the power play.

The Slovakian was lucky as the puck, previously intended for Caufield, deflected off a Penguins defenseman before crossing the goal line.

In the third period, Jake Guentzel sent both teams into overtime. Sidney Crosby, who delivered an excellent throw to his teammate, received his 23rd assist of the year thanks to his teammate's success.

Jake Allen had an excellent performance, making 30 saves, some of which were extremely important. His opponent Tristan Jarry fended off 25 pucks.

The Habs will be back in action on February 6th when they face the Capitals in Washington.
