Quebec’s Ministry of Cybersecurity and Digital Affairs confirmed Thursday that a computer security incident caused by an employee’s action was quickly resolved.
This employee forwarded documents containing personal data of 529 public employees to a personal email inbox. It acted in good faith and cooperated with the ministry, it said in response to questions from Radio-Canada.
The incident occurred on May 23 when this employee was transferred to another public organization. She explained that she had forwarded these documents in order to be able to answer questions from her deputy and thus make the transition easier.
The ministry clarified that the employee had access to this information as part of her duties.
Even if the employee did not intend to use the information for an illegal purpose, this practice violates the security regulations that apply to the company’s employees MCN
the ministry stressed in an email to Radio-Canada.
In addition, the ministry said that a police report had been filed so that an investigation could be initiated.
The employee was also penalized for failing to comply with the ministry’s rules requiring the destruction of information sent to the personal email inbox.
The Access to Information Commission was also informed about the incident.
