Montreal Canadiens forward Cole Caufield has not released any new information regarding contract negotiations, news that fans of the team are eagerly awaiting.
The small forward said during Friday’s season recap that he was focused on treating his shoulder injury.
“I’ll let my agent take care of my contract. Eventually there will be an agreement, I’m not too worried about that. […] I’m currently focused on my rehabilitation,” he told reporters.
He was very impressed with his impressive performances in his young career.
“I haven’t proved anything, I haven’t even played a full season in the NHL.”
The Wisconsin native also said his fitness hasn’t changed.
“Everything is going according to plan, it’s helping me a lot with the extra time I’ve had and I’ll have all summer to follow up on what I need to do and everything seems good so far.”
Despite being sidelined for most of the season, Caufield has jumped at the opportunity to experience more of his adopted hometown.
“It’s a very beautiful city, plus the weather is nicer and there are more things to do,” he said.
He envisions playing with his buddy Nick Suzuki for several years.
“I think we’re developing a special chemistry. It’s something that excites me.”
The 22-year-old American has proven himself as one of the National Hockey League’s elite this season. Despite missing 36 games in the regular season, the right winger led the Habs with 26 goals (level with Nick Suzuki) and added 10 assists.
The one who was supposed to achieve limited autonomy this summer underwent surgery on his right shoulder in February. Two weeks earlier, he had learned his campaign was over. He had injured himself earlier in the year and had coped with the pain in several encounters.
In his career, Caufield has 84 points, including 53 goals, in 123 games. The Canadian’s first-round pick (15th overall) in the 2019 draft came to CH in 2021 and made the playoffs that year.
