Ukraine and Finland want to attract Canadian investors

Yuliya Kovaliv, speaking at a dinner for business groups in Ottawa, said her country is focused on defeating the Russian invasion, but the next step will be to rebuild key infrastructure and services in Ukraine.

She says Ukraine will need a Marshall Plan-style financing program to bounce back after the war ends, and that Canadian companies should strategize for the role they can play.

Finland’s ambassador to Canada, Roy Eriksson, also said Canadian companies could help replace his country’s trade with neighboring Russia and said both countries are familiar with developing products that work in cold climates.

The two officials say Canada has come much closer to European countries since Russia invaded a year ago, with Finland joining NATO and the European Union considering Canada a partner in terms of energy and key minerals.

But neither ambassador sees Canada as a major supplier of fossil fuels, both talk about switching to renewable energy or buying oil from other European countries.
