Former Prime Minister Laurent Lamothe filed a complaint in the Federal Court of Canada on Thursday, December 22nd. This lawsuit seeks to overturn the Canadian government’s decision to add his name to the list of figures sanctioned for their alleged involvement in the financing of criminal activities in Haiti, the plaintiff said in a press release.
Port-au-Prince, December 26, 2022.-” In his trial, Laurent Lamothe specifically argues that the Foreign Minister of Canada, Ms. Mélanie Joly, arbitrarily put his name on the sanctions list without providing any evidence. She alleges that Mr. Lamothe provided financial and operational support to gunmen in Haiti. These allegations are completely unfounded and run counter to the actions taken by Mr Lamothe during his tenure as Prime Minister,” the statement said.
The former tenant of the Primature has criticized Minister Joly and Justin Trudeau’s government for a total lack of transparency and stressed that the reasons for his name being included in the list of special economic measures were not given.
Additionally, Ottawa authorities have never informed Laurent Lamothe of his actions. They also gave him no opportunity to refute the allegations against him, he adds in the document.
Based on those reflections, the former Primature boss says he is determined to seek justice. Former Minister of Affairs and Worship promises to fight until acquitted.
