Promoting Wellbeing and Justice, Toronto City Council Muslims Program

Tehran (IQNA)-Asma Malik, who made history last week after being elected the first Muslim woman wearing a headscarf to the Toronto City Council, plans to take action for justice and well-being — socially.

According to CTV News, there will be nine new faces on the Toronto City Council this year, including Asma Malik, a 38-year-old woman who was elected in Ward 10-Spadina-Fort York with 36.6% of the vote against 11 other contenders. .

“The results are exceptional. We are changing not only the face of Toronto’s political leadership, but also its substance. I am proud to pave the way for greater presence and participation in Toronto city politics. What excites me the most is the next and new generation of our community leaders who will play a role in the political leadership of the city and help serve the community and establish equality. Living more economically and, above all, tackling the climate crisis is one of my priorities,” she said.

From 2014 to 2018, Asma Malik served as a school board member for the 10 Trinity Spadina congregation and was the first hijab-wearing Muslim woman to be elected to public office in Canada. His parents immigrated to Canada from Pakistan more than five decades ago, and Malik and his siblings grew up in Toronto. This rights and social justice activist graduated from the University of Toronto and has worked in politics, communications and community organizing.

Before beginning her campaign for the Council, Malik served as Director of Advocacy and Organizing for the Atkinson Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting social and economic justice in Ontario. She took unpaid leave in June to focus on her campaign.

Malick said one of her top priorities as councilwoman is to make housing more affordable by working on housing and tightening rent controls.

Other key elements of his campaign include support for more affordable and accessible transportation, more green space, and safer neighborhoods and streets.

Despite the growing climate of anti-Muslim hatred, large numbers of Muslims won the 2021 general election. At least 12 Muslim candidates, including two women, won the September 2021 election.
