Damien Hirst burns his paintings in his London gallery

Damien Hirst, one of the most highly rated artists in the world, likes to approach the fireplaces provocatively in silver overalls. In front of dozens of people present and live on Instagram, he burns his pictures one after the other, all similar with colorful dots on printed sheets.

I instinctively feel that burning artworks is not a good thing. But when I think about it, I know I have to burn the works because it’s part of the process I’m inthe artist said solemnly to reporters, throwing his papers into the flames.

Damien Hirst presented his project The Currency in July 2021. He has offered 10,000 works for sale [ces peintures avec des points multicolores], at $2000 each. Each of the 10,000 paintings corresponds to a JNF.

A JNF is a tamper-proof digital certificate of authenticity whose ownership is traceable using blockchain technology (Blockchain). Concretely, it is a contract based on a virtual or real object, the rules of which are defined by computer code.

For a year, until July 27, the buyers had time to make a decision: either they chose the painting or the JNF. More than half (5149) chose to keep the painting, the others preferred the JNF, it was their artwork that was burned.

A thousand paintings were to be burned on Tuesday. The others will burn in October.
