Training camp provides a great opportunity for young players to prove they deserve a spot in the National Hockey League (NHL) and also serves as a refresher for veterans looking to get back in shape. So far this year, some players are showing that they are ready to start the campaign.
Before Tuesday’s games, Nashville Predators forward Matt Duchene led the Bettman league with seven points (two goals and five assists) in just two games. He also had a blast on Friday with a five-point production in the 7-1 win over the Tampa Bay Lightning. He also threaded the needle against the Bernese on Monday in a controversial duel in Switzerland.
Alongside Duchene, two other men have picked up seven points since the start of the regular season, San Jose Sharks winger Timo Meier and Toronto Maple Leafs’ Nicholas Robertson. He had three assists in Monday’s 5-1 win over the Montreal Canadiens.
Other notable athletes who are in good camp include Shane Pinto (Ottawa Senators) and William Nylander (Maple Leafs), both with five points. Carolina Hurricanes defenseman Brent Burns has the same number of points while teammate Martin Necas has six from three games.
A very convincing goalkeeper
Vitek Vanecek of the New Jersey Devils is the only goaltender with three wins. He has a save percentage of .945 and 1.13 goals against average; On Monday, he notably stopped 24 shots to help his team knock out the Boston Bruins 1-0.
Several masked men claimed two wins. In Carolina, Antti Raanta (1.20 avg and .957) is in good shape to start the season. At the Washington Capitals, Charlie Lindgren (.95 avg, 0.953 odds) has made big strides to find a place at the club. For his part, Martin Jones (1.90 avg, odds 0.925) has reassuring stats with the Seattle Kraken. For the Calgary Flames, Jacob Markstrom put aside last spring’s final elimination after maintaining a .971 rate and a .60 average.
