A pan-Canadian coalition of migrants and civil society groups want the government to quickly implement a regularization program for undocumented migrants.
For Solidarité sans Frontières spokeswoman Hady Anne, the timing is good for the federal government to listen to the coalition’s demands.
“We have more than 500,000 in Canadian territory without status, which is really serious and dangerous for a society like ours today,” he said in an interview with The Canadian Press.
During the pandemic, the federal government launched a regularization program for asylum seekers working in the healthcare sector. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has asked his Minister for Immigration and Citizenship to explore ways to legalize the status of undocumented workers.
The coalition believes it is possible to include all undocumented immigrants. She believes the government should address this while Parliament prepares to reconvene next week.
“It’s realistic and it’s possible,” says Mr. Anne. These people are mostly people who leave their territory because they are displaced by wars, dictators or hunger. They are there to seek dignity. They live among us. I don’t think her life bothers anyone in Canada. »
Demonstrations are planned in Montreal, Ottawa, Miramichi and Fredericton in particular.
