Eugenie Bouchard’s success continued at the tennis tournament in Chennai, India, as after winning the second round in singles the day before, she did the same in doubles on Thursday.
At the side of the Belgian Yanina Wickmayer she secured a victory in three sets with 5:7, 6:3 and 12:10 at the expense of the Russians Anastasia Gasanova and Oksana Selekhmeteva. The 1h 54min duel was hard fought, as evidenced by the 74 points per pair.
The winners will meet the tandem of Georgian Natela Dzalamidze and Russia Anna Blinkova in the semifinals. The other Square of Aces confrontation will involve Ottawa’s Gabriela Dabrowski and her partner Luisa Stefani. The first seeded players of the competition meet Thai’s Peangtarn Plipuech and Japan’s Moyuka Uchijima.
To return to Bouchard, ranked 902nd in the world in singles, she will cross blades with Argentina’s Nadia Podoroska (298th) in the quarterfinals on Friday.
It’s not Zhao’s fault
In a second-round duel, Canada’s Carol Zhao lost the flag in straight sets 6-1, 7-5 to Moscow’s Varvara Gracheva, ranked 80th in the world and runner-up in the tournament.
Zhao occupied the 187th level of the WTA circuit and was mostly sunk by four breaks, which he conceded on 11 opportunities offered to the opponent. Gracheva scored 76 points, 20 more than the loser.
Another Maple Leaf player will also play in the quarterfinals. Rebecca Marino, seeded seventh, meets third, Magda Linette from Poland.
