Rebuilding after Hurricane Fiona

Atlantic Canadians and Quebecers are resilient. In the wake of Hurricane Fiona and the devastation it caused, thousands of citizens are rebuilding their homes and communities, and businesses of all sizes are getting back on their feet. The Government of Canada will continue to respond to the immediate needs of people affected by the storm and support the long-term recovery of affected regions and local economies.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau today announced the creation of the Hurricane Fiona Recovery Fund. The fund will provide up to an additional $300 million over two years starting this year to help those affected by the storm and support long-term recovery efforts.

The Fund is part of the Government of Canada’s response to the aftermath of Hurricane Fiona in Atlantic Canada and eastern Quebec and will specifically support the following recovery efforts:

  • Helping local communities and businesses rebuild and recover faster from the aftermath of Hurricane Fiona.
  • Restart the economic activity that local communities rely on by beginning to repair and rebuild critical infrastructure damaged or destroyed by the storm, including fishing piers and small artisanal ports. Infrastructure will be repaired to better withstand future damage.
  • Ensuring maritime safety and protection of marine fauna.

The new fund will help cover costs that may not be covered by existing federal programs, including the Disaster Financial Assistance Arrangements (DFAA). Through the DFAA, the federal government covers up to 90% of the province’s eligible expenses following a disaster, including emergency transportation, meals and shelter, and replacement of homes and non-catastrophic items. insurable.

Recovering from the widespread impacts of Hurricane Fiona requires a collective effort. The new Hurricane Fiona Recovery Fund builds on assistance previously announced by the federal government, including the deployment of Canadian Armed Forces personnel and matching donations to the Canadian Red Cross.   • The Hurricane Fiona Recovery Fund will be coordinated by the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency, which will work with other federal departments and agencies such as Canada Economic Development for Quebec Regions, Fisheries and Oceans Canada and Transport Canada to identify the needs of people in the region and distribute the funds accordingly.
  • Immediately after Hurricane Fiona, the federal government approved a request for assistance from the government of Nova Scotia. Subsequently, requests for assistance from Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland and Labrador were also approved shortly after they were received.
  • In response to these requests, the government continues to support provinces to meet their immediate needs.
