Statement by the Prime Minister on Labor Day

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau made the following statement on Labor Day today:

“Today, on Labor Day, we celebrate the Canadian workers who are the cornerstones of our communities and our economy.

“It is our people who built this country. Our workers build the roads we travel, maintain the technology that connects us, and ship produce to our grocery stores, among other things. That’s why we rely on them every day.

“Canadians have recovered more than all the jobs lost since the pandemic began. As our recovery continues and our economy continues to grow, our people face new challenges and seize opportunities as they arise. For example, in our quest to build a clean economy, we ensure workers in our automotive sector benefit from Canada’s leadership in electric cars. From mining critical minerals to manufacturing batteries and vehicles, we’ve already supported tens of thousands of jobs and attracted billions of dollars in investment. And there is still a lot to do.

“In energy, technology, infrastructure, crafts and more, the Canadian workforce has invaluable expertise. The Canadian government will continue to support and create opportunities for workers so we can build a better future for all. From protecting the rights of unionized workers to improving workplace safety and skills, we partner with the labor movement. We started the program earlier this year skills for success to help Canadians gain the skills they need to be successful in the workplace. We are modernizing employment insurance to better meet the changing needs of Canadian workers and to reflect new realities such as: B. more jobs in the demand economy. In addition, we’ve raised the federal minimum wage to $15.55 an hour – indexed for inflation – and we’re introducing 10 days of paid sick leave for federally regulated workers.

“Canadians work hard every day, but we know families are feeling the effects of inflation, including rising food and gas prices. That’s why we’re working right now to make life more affordable. For example, we enhanced the Canada Workers Benefit (CWB) to give families back up to $2,400. In addition, we reduce the costs of housing, childcare and dental care as part of our services Plan to make life more affordable to help the middle class and those who work hard to join it.

“On behalf of the Government of Canada, I wish all Canadians a happy and safe Labor Day. Today we recognize the tireless work and determination of union activists who fought for paid furloughs, universal health care and employment insurance. We are also committed to building on the progress they have made and continue to make our jobs safe and build a bright future. »
