WestJet will suspend flights between Toronto and Montreal this winter. No date has been announced for resumption of service, but according to an article published by CTV News yesterday, the airline is suspending flights between the two cities from October 28 to April next year.
No reason was given for the suspension of service.
“The WestJet Group remains extremely committed to Eastern Canada,” said Madison Kruger, a spokesperson for WestJet, in an email to CTV News.
The spokesperson added that WestJet is expanding its presence in Eastern Canada by offering more non-stop flights to Western Canada, “while providing more affordable leisure and sun travel options across Canada.”
WestJet announced at the end of September that it would integrate Sunwing Airlines into its core business by the end of October 2024. WestJet bought Sunwing last May.
This isn’t the first time WestJet has dropped routes to eastern Canada. Last May, the company reduced the frequency of its service between Ottawa and Toronto to one flight per day. Direct flights between Ottawa and Halifax were discontinued in fall 2022. During the winter of 2022, flights from Charlottetown, Fredericton and Quebec were not available, according to CTV News.
