Gymnasts to watch at the 2023 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships
In the wake of Simone Biles’ search for historical exploits, the women’s competitions promise to be exciting.
In the team competition, the USA will look to defend their title while Great Britain can climb to a new podium after last year’s silver medal. The fight for the bronze medal could be intense with competitors such as Italy, Brazil, France, Japan, the People’s Republic of China and Canada.
The allocation of Olympic quotas for the Paris 2024 Games will make this competition even more at stake.
Rebecca Andrade, reigning world champion in the individual all-around, will be one of the stars of this 2023 World Championships. The Brazilian made her country’s history in Liverpool last year and will try again in Antwerp. But to get there she has to fight with the American Shilese Jones or the British Jessica Gadirova who stood with her on the podium.
Melanie de Jesus dos Santos can hope to keep up with them after his two gold medals at the World Challenge Cup in Paris. The Frenchwoman, who finished ahead of Andrade on the uneven bars, is now training in Houston and has shown how much the new environment has helped her. She will have another opportunity to prove it.
Simone Biles, her training partner, is obviously the overwhelming favorite on vault and floor, but other competitions appear to be much more open. This is especially true for the uneven bars, in which the young Algerian competes Kaylia Nemour can have big ambitions for the movement that bears his name.
Bronze medalist on vault in 2022, the Frenchwoman Coline Devillard will try to get to a new podium, while her compatriot Marine Boyer has the opportunity to forget his fourth-place finish last year on balance beam.
