At this time when the world is facing crises that affect everyone on the planet, we must join forces to find common solutions.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau concluded his attendance at the G20 Summit in New Delhi, India today. During the summit, he pushed for progress on issues that affect people, such as climate change and food and energy insecurity, and made a number of funding announcements. He also emphasized the importance of the rule of law.
In New Delhi, Prime Minister Trudeau stressed the importance of acting together to accelerate economic growth to benefit everyone. He said G20 partners must urgently mobilize to address the consequences of climate change, which is exacerbating global food, economic and energy insecurity and causing disruptions in supply chains. He expressed concern about the situation of G20 partners and other countries that have also suffered from extremely severe flooding and wildfires in recent months, and explained the devastating impact of wildfires in Canada’s provinces and territories this summer.
During the G20 Summit, the Prime Minister reiterated Canada’s unwavering support for the rules-based international order and the global trade and economic progress that depends on it. He unequivocally condemned Russia’s brutal and unjustified invasion of Ukraine and stressed that the most vulnerable in our societies were most affected by the global consequences of war. If we truly want to work together on the international stage to stimulate the economy, achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and maintain the integrity and effectiveness of the G20, we must demand with one voice that Russia end its illegal war against Ukraine . The Prime Minister also reiterated that Canada will never recognize the results of the sham elections currently being held by Russia in Ukraine, which is nothing more than a cynical attempt on its part to legitimize its military conquest under the guise of democracy.
During the summit, Prime Minister Trudeau advocated for stronger and more inclusive multilateral institutions and welcomed the African Union’s membership of the G20. At the same time, he called on developing countries to make their voices better heard on the international stage. The Prime Minister also took the opportunity to meet with African Union President Azali Assoumani to congratulate the Union on the leadership it has shown in promoting multilateralism and representation of the countries of the South.
The Prime Minister and other G20 leaders released a joint statement committing to accelerating sustainable growth and reforming international financial institutions to bring them into line with the 21e Century to support the digital transformation of our public institutions and promote equality for women and girls in all their diversity.
To help achieve the SDGs around the world, including mitigating the effects of climate change, improving food security and empowering all women and girls, Prime Minister Trudeau announced that Canada will provide:
- up to $63 million in funding for five new climate partnership projects. These projects will support climate change adaptation in sub-Saharan Africa, creating climate-resilient economies, protecting and enhancing biodiversity, and empowering women and girls, all through nature-based solutions;
- $7.7 million to finance the inclusive and sustainable development of agricultural value chains in Bolivia to improve the resilience of vulnerable indigenous populations to climate change and food insecurity;
- $7 million to the Climate Catalytic Finance Facility to strengthen climate finance projects in developing countries and support projects that target the impacts of climate change on economically vulnerable groups, particularly women and girls;
- $15.7 million to fund and grow women-owned agribusinesses in Nigeria;
- $15 million to strengthen food security in the Democratic Republic of Congo and increase income for women in the sector;
- $22 million to improve school nutrition in Burkina Faso. This will help reduce chronic food and nutritional insecurity in this country and meet the nutritional and educational needs of the most vulnerable, especially girls.
Canada is the proud architect of the G20 and is heavily involved in this group. We are committed to driving sustainable economic progress worldwide while protecting our planet. We will continue our efforts to deliver real results for Canada and our partners around the world, now and in the future.
