SAINT-EUSTACHE, Qc — Emergency calls to 9-1-1 from four Nunavik villages are being answered by Saint-Eustache. This year-long pilot was announced Thursday by Ian Lafrenière, the minister responsible for relations with First Nations and Inuit.
Minister Lafrenière was at Saint-Eustache Town Hall to make the announcement, along with Mayor Pierre Charron and Kativik Regional Government President Hilda Snowball.
Since Monday, 9-1-1 calls from the municipality of Umiujaq have been received by the Saint-Eustache dispatcher. Three other communities, those of Kuujjuarapik, Puvirnituq and Inukjuak, will eventually be connected to the emergency services in the Deux-Montagnes region.
To make this initiative possible, we hired 13 new dispatchers who had received special training from the Université Laval.
These dispatchers were sensitized to the historical, political and socio-cultural context. You must also be perfectly bilingual. You can also benefit from a translation service available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
