However, Chainey emphasized an important point about the talented young players coming into the NHL. Ryan Getzlaf and Corey Perry, for example, were no altar boys when they put on a Ducks jersey in 2005.

“Young people change, develop, mature and then become leaders. We shouldn’t think that Corey Perry and Ryan Getzlaf had much maturity when we drafted them. And Getzlaf has become an exceptional captain. It takes time to fully mature in the National League. You always have to be patient, you have to give yourself almost five years.” – Chainey

Alex Ovechkin also needed time to reach a certain level of maturity before he managed to lift the Stanley Cup in 2018 at the age of 33.
