18-year-old forward Connor Bedard scored two goals for Canada in the win, including the game-winning goal late in the second period. Montreal Canadiens defenseman Kaiden Guhle received an assist in the win.

However, the English had taken the lead in the game thanks to Liam Kirk, a former sixth-rounder from the defunct Arizona Coyotes.

But Michael Bunting of the Pittsburgh Penguins got everyone back on top moments later with a shot from the point that deceived the alertness of goaltender Jackson Whistle, who made 30 saves in the loss.

It was Tampa Bay Lightning forward Brandon Hagel who scored Canada’s other goal.

After trailing 4-1 in the third period, Great Britain didn’t give up and even reduced the deficit. Ben O’Connor made fun of the Canadian defense and then beat Joel Hofer with a shot into the net.

Canada plays its next game on Sunday against Denmark.

Captain Tavares

Additionally, Hockey Canada announced that John Tavares will be the captain of its team for the World Championship.

The veteran moved to the Maple Leafs after the Toronto Maple Leafs were eliminated in the first round of the playoffs. He didn’t play in the game against Great Britain but was expected to be in uniform against Denmark.

Andrew Mangiapane, Colton Parayko and Damon Severson will be his deputies.

Tavares is competing in a World Cup for only the second time, having represented Canada at the competition in 2010. However, he won gold medals for his country at the Sochi Olympics (2014), the World Junior Championships (2008 and 2009) and the Hockey World Cup (2016).
