It seems like it’s going to be a very unpleasant experience to face Montreal Canadiens rookie Florian Xhekaj.
Defender Owen Protz, who was drafted by the Habs in the fourth round in 2024 (102e overall) had the misfortune of coming into conflict with the robust striker last season while playing for the Sudbury Wolves in the Ontario League (OHL). During an episode of the podcast, he returned to his clashes with the youngest brother Xhekaj The Sick Podcast – Draftcast Recruitswhich is dedicated to hopes.
A fortunate twist of fate also saw the two players become roommates when Protz moved to the Brantford Bulldogs.
“When I was at Sudbury, we hated him,” Protz said. “We hated him so much. He’s big, he’s fiery. And he can play very well. He’s the kind of player you don’t like to play against.”
Protz believes that every team should have its Xhekaj.
“He does everything,” he added. “He blocks shots, he throws the gloves, he scores goals. He runs the forecheck. Having a guy like that on your team is a must.”
The Ottawa native also praised Michael Hage, who was voted 21ste from the CH in Las Vegas. At the development camp in Brossard he was impressed by his abilities.
“When I saw him in action, I was jealous of the things he could do with the puck,” he said. “There’s a reason he was selected in the first round.”
Protz will return to Brantford next season to continue his development. He is considered a very solid defender with a defensive nature who can provide a good first pass.
