Boston Bruins representative Linus Ullmark became the 13th goaltender in National Hockey League (NHL) history to score.
The 28-year-old masked man scored on target in Saturday’s 3-1 win over the Canucks in Vancouver. It was the first time a Bruins goaltender had managed the feat. Here are four other Cerberus that did the same:
Martin Brother
The Quebecer is the only goaltender in NHL history to score three goals! Brodeur scored his first goal in the closing moments of Game 1 of the first round playoff series between the New Jersey Devils and the Montreal Canadiens in 1997.
On February 15, 2000, the famous number 30 did it again, becoming the first and only goalkeeper to score a winning goal. Philadelphia Flyers forward Daymond Langkow accidentally sent the puck into his empty goal. Brodeur was the last Devils player to touch the puck. It was he who scored the goal to make it 3-1, the Flyers reduced the deficit before the end of regular time, but the Devils eventually won 4-2.
13 years later, Brodeur completed his “hat trick”. On March 21, 2013, in a duel against the Carolina Hurricanes, the Montrealers took advantage of an accident by striker Jordan Staal. The latter sent the puck into his goal after goalkeeper Dan Ellis left his goal and while there was a delayed penalty. Technically, it is the only goal scored by a goaltender while their opponent was still on the ice.
Ron Hexall
The Flyers legend put the puck into the opponent’s net twice. In December 1987, he became the second masked man to score but the first to do so, sending the disc himself towards the goal of his rivals, in this case the Bruins.
A little over two years later, in April 1989, Hextall became the first goaltender to score while shorthanded in the playoffs. It was against the Washington Capitals in Game 5 of the postseason opening round series.
Jose Theodore
The Montreal Canadiens goaltender not only scored an empty goal against the New York Islanders at Nassau Coliseum on January 2, 2001, but also scored a 3-0 shutout on January 2, 2001 never seen again in the NHL. Damian Rhodes (January 2, 1999) is the other goalkeeper to have stopped all opposition shots and scored in the same game. The Ottawa Senators athlete made it in a 6-0 win over the Devils.
Mike Smith
Smith, known for his puck control near the net, was 0.1 seconds off the list of goaltenders who hit the target. On October 19, 2013, the Arizona Coyotes representative scored a goal in the very last moments of a duel against the Detroit Red Wings. His success saw the “Yotes” win 5-2.
