Philadelphia Flyers defenseman Tony DeAngelo drew the ire of the Tampa Bay Lightning players Tuesday when he delivered a brawl under the belt of veteran Corey Perry.
In the midst of a scuffle near the Bolts’ net, Number 77 came between the umpires to smack Perry at the family jewels with the blade of his bat. The former Montreal Canadiens collapsed but quickly stood up to convey his mindset to his opponent.
A stack of Lightning players was also created on the back of the Flyers.
DeAngelo was automatically given a five-minute major penalty and was knocked out of the game with just under three minutes to go. Those who will certainly not be nominated for the Lady Byng Trophy tried to explain themselves after the meeting.
“I tried to give him a little nudge. I didn’t want to knock there. A moment earlier he had tried to snatch my cane from my hand. He talks the whole game. I offered to fight him. He didn’t want to fight,” he said in a press crowd, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer.
“The recovery is probably looking worse than it should have been. That’s it. I took 30 hits on the ground. And when I get up, they don’t give me a chance to do anything,” DeAngelo continued.
The 27-year-old has been suspended in the past in the National League after being penalized for three games in 2017 for shoving an official. The New York Rangers also fired him in 2020 for behavioral issues.
