If there’s a contender for the Montreal Canadiens this season, it’s defenseman Lane Hutson.
The small, skilful 19-year-old scored twice in Boston University’s 6-4 win over Providence in Boston on Friday.

First he put his team ahead by scoring from an impossible angle in the first period and then added even more by hitting the target with a wrist shot from the blue line in the second period.
This brings the 62nd pick in the 2022 draft to 12 goals and 41 points in just 31 games. He surpassed Luke Hughes (39) and Adam Fox (40) in their early college seasons. In NCAA history, only New York Rangers legend Brian Leetch, 47, has done more for an under-19 defenseman in 37 games.
Hutson’s brother Quinn also collected a double in the duel of the day.
Wilmer Skoog and Matt Brown completed the scoring for the terriers, while Brett Berard, Nick Poisson, Liam Valente and Chase Yoder provided the cue for the visitors.
The win also earned Boston University first place overall in the Hockey East league.
