Finalist in Mouilleron-Le-Captif, France, Canadian tennis player Vasek Pospisil scored another positive opening result a few days ago at the Challenger tournament in Ismaning, Germany, where he defeated German Philip Florig in straight sets 6-3 and 6- 2 on Wednesday.
The Maple Leaf representative, who was beaten in his title fight at the previous tournament, quickly forgot the setback, showing dominance by knocking out the crowd favorite in under an hour.
The 122nd racquet in the world and third-ranked player wasn’t concerned as he didn’t offer his opponent a break point and triumphed in 90% of rallies after putting his first ball in play.
He happily attacked the 874th player in the world, offering himself a total of six break points and converting half of them.
In the next round, Pospisil meets Czech Jonas Forejtek, ranked 238th in the world.
Alexis Galarneau in the Quarterfinals
At another Challenger tournament in Fairfield, USA, Quebec’s Alexis Galarneau advanced to the quarterfinals by beating American Evan Zhu 6-1, 6-4 in straight sets.
The ATP’s 227th hitter was particularly dominant on return of serve, winning half of 42 rallies when his opponent put his first ball between the lines. The winner maintained a 60% efficiency percentage for their opponent even in a second ball situation. Such a feat allowed Galarneau to use 10 break points, and he used half.
Balls in hand, Galarneau put 67% of his first balls in play and won 21 of the 30 rallies that followed. He also saved each of the two break points offered to his rival.
In the next round, Galarneau meets American Sam Riffice, the 650th racquet in the world.
