New creative technology program options are available for creative technology and design students at the University of Regina.
Students explore digital culture by working in and with interactive installations and media
explains Charity Marsh, professor of media and coordinator of the creative technologies program at the University of Regina.
The Diploma in Creative Technologies is a two-year program offered by the Faculty of Media, Arts and Performance. The courses offered can also count towards a four-year diploma in creative technologies and design.
Creative Technologies and Design is ideal for students interested in the connections between art, design, technology and culture
believes Ms. Marsh.
We embrace all of these new and even old technologies and use them in innovative, curious, experimental and fun ways.
According to the university, through this interdisciplinary program, students learn to use various platforms, including virtual reality, augmented reality, 3D animation, robotics, digital storytelling, artificial intelligence and video game design.
Virtual reality is certainly linked to education and learning and we know that virtual reality is used in medicine and health studies, for example
claims Ms. Marsh.
David Dick, dean of the Faculty of Arts and Performance Media, believes the addition of this program will open many doors for future careers.
Our students place great emphasis on acquiring skills as artists, developers, designers, scientists, theorists, entrepreneurs and practical researchers
he states in a press release published on Friday.
David Dick believes this interdisciplinary program will allow students to understand technology and art from a new perspective and be successful in exploring digital culture.
Students from all disciplines come together and learn to talk to each other across disciplines. You learn to communicate, build and create together
he explains.
The University of Regina says it was the first university in Canada to introduce a creative technology program and that the new programs are unique to both Saskatchewan and the Prairie provinces.
