United States Open: The story, twice instead of once

Before the first round of the US Open on Thursday, a scorecard of 62 had only been achieved in a major tournament. From now on, the Americans Rickie Fowler and Xander Schauffele are joint holders of this record together with the South African Branden Grace.

In fact, Grace was the only one to pull off this feat during the 2017 British Open. Fowler and Schauffele are thus added to this list.

Fowler birdied no fewer than 10 in the opening round of the tournament, which is being played on the par-70 north course at the Los Angeles Country Club. However, he committed two bogeys on the 11th and 17th holes.

For his part, Schauffele had eight birdies but committed no bogeys.

Apparently, the two men are ahead of the competition at -8 and have a two-shot lead over two other golfers, including a former champion of the event. American Dustin Johnson also had a good day’s work with a round of 64 (-6). Johnson lifted the championship trophy in 2016. The second golfer with -6 is American Wyndham Clark.

Northern Ireland’s Rory McIlroy, who won the competition in 2011, achieved a score of 65 (-5). He had a hole to go at -6 but missed his last hole.

Seven Canadians are taking part in the tournament, including recent Canadian Open winner Nick Taylor (+2). Mackenzie Hughes is the best Canadian at -3.

The winner of the 2022 tournament, England’s Matt Fitzpatrick, provided a first scorecard of 71, a stroke over par.
