(New York) A US publication reports that Costco customers in the US are increasingly being asked to show photo ID at self-checkout as the company seeks to curb unauthorized card sharing.
In a written note to Business Insider, Costco says it’s noticed an increase in the number of shoppers using cards that don’t belong to them, especially at self-service checkouts. The company believes it is unfair that non-members can enjoy the same benefits and rates as those who are members.
Costco already requires its customers to show their membership cards at regular checkouts; We now ask that you present your card with a photo at the self-service checkouts.
The company also claims that requiring proof of membership reduces shoplifting.
Business Insider points out that while Costco is the third-largest retailer in the world, it derives a significant portion of its profits from membership fees.
In Canada, Costco is one of the top five grocery chains, along with the Canadian companies Loblaw, Metro and Sobeys and the American Walmart.
