Two out of three Canadians support a mixed healthcare system based on the Swedish and French models

The introduction of a mixed healthcare system like that in France and Sweden would be supported by a majority of citizens, according to a new IPSOS poll sponsored by the Montreal Economic Institute (IEDM) and released this morning.

MONTREAL, Nov. 15, 2022 /CNW Telbec/ – “If Canadians still fear the excesses of the American system, they are willing to experiment with mixed models like those of France and Sweden,” said Emmanuelle B. Faubert, economist at MEI. “In the context of Quebec, this shows that there is a clear mandate for CAQ’s independent mini-hospital project. »

Across the country, 64 percent of respondents say the provinces should learn from the French and Swedish healthcare systems. In Quebec, support for these models reaches 73 percent.

Both France and Sweden use independent operators of clinics and hospitals whose care is covered by the state insurance system.

In Quebec, the Coalition avenir Québec has advocated the construction of mini-hospitals run by independent operators to reduce emergency room wait times.

Half of the respondents stated that they were dissatisfied with the system in their province.

The population does not feel the massive reinvestments of recent years: seven out of ten respondents state that they have seen no effect (38 percent) or a negative effect (33 percent) on the healthcare system.

“Canadians understand that we’re not going to solve the problems in the healthcare system by just putting a few billion more into it,” Faubert said. “It is clear that Quebec and Canada are ripe for a healthcare system overhaul, particularly through the deployment of independent operators, provided access remains universal. »

The survey was conducted between October 25 and October 28, 2022 among 1,174 Canadians over the age of 18.
