A few days after winning the Ice Hockey World Championship with the Canadian team, Samuel Montembeault is still on cloud nine.
In an interview with Jean-Charles Lajoie on Tuesday, he told how he was able to witness the event.
“It was the first time I had the chance to play at international level. It’s also the first time I’ve had a chance to play playoff games since junior level. It was really a nice experience. I’m very happy to have won the tournament.”
The Canadiens goaltender adds that the chemistry within the Canada lineup quickly solidified.
“We were lucky. We had a really good group. Everyone got along really well. We really had a lot of fun. We were able to improve over the course of the tournament. Afterwards we were all very happy to celebrate. Everyone contributed.”
It has not gone unnoticed by the Quebecer that his contract situation was discussed in Montreal while he was on duty with Canada.
“My contract has another year to run. I still have plenty of time to renegotiate with them. You have a lot of work to do this summer. You have to solve several problems. If it’s possible in training camp like Jake Allen did, or during the season like Jordan Harris did, I would definitely be very happy.
A third scenario, finding another supplier, would also be considered if the Canadians delayed contacting Montembeault to begin contract negotiations.
“I can only focus on myself. I have a very important summer ahead of me. I’ll have to focus on my game throughout the season. If I have a good season, it will just be better for me at the end of next season.
