technology
Spotify is launching new features, notably one that will make the application even more of a social network in its own right and no longer “just” a streaming platform.
pitchfork reports that Spotify has announced major design changes to the app, including a new vertical video stream. During a 90-minute streaming show, Spotify also announced a new built-in pre-record button. Instead of static recommendations, users now see a continuous stream of audio and video previews of playlists, albums, podcasts, and audiobooks. The same previews are now integrated into Spotify’s search function.
A new strategy
These new features come after Spotify announced major layoffs that have resulted in a roughly 6% decline in its global workforce. At a conference hosted by Morgan Stanley, Spotify’s chief financial officer called the layoffs ” really positive » and a necessary step for the further development of the company.
Spotify also recently unveiled its custom AI guide, DJ, which is now available to premium users in the US and Canada as part of a beta rollout. ” DJ would use data about users’ listening habits to select songs to play.
SoundCloud, Spotify’s competitor, announced a vertical video stream similar to TikTok’s earlier this week. While the SoundCloud feed offers a similar music feed based on listening history and music taste, it also includes a line of text explaining how a song was chosen.
