OTTAWA – Canada’s unemployment rate remained at 5.5% for the third straight month in September, according to Statistics Canada, while the Canadian economy added 64,000 jobs.
The federal agency adds that in Quebec the unemployment rate increased by 0.1% to 4.4%, but employment saw a significant increase of 39,000, or 0.9%.
Employment rose by 64,000 jobs in Canada in September, mostly in part-time work, which increased by 48,000.
After a slight decline in August, the employment rate, which indicates the proportion of employed people in the population aged 15 and over, rose by 0.1% to 62.0%.
Statistics Canada says employment increased for both women and men aged 25 to 54, while it fluctuated little among young people aged 15 to 24 and people aged 55 and over.
Last month’s job growth was largely due to the return to classes, which increased the number of jobs in the education services sector. There were also increases in transportation, finance, insurance, real estate services and rentals.
Statistics Canada notes that average hourly wages rose 5.0% (+$1.63 to $34.01) in September, following increases of 4.9% in August and 5.0% in July .
