For some teachers’ unions, a simple ‘play handle’. The technology lesson now compulsory in the 6th grade will be abolished at the beginning of the next school year, announced ministerial circulars published on Thursday. This measure is intended to enable a determination the hour of promotion or deepening in mathematics or French fall within the scope of higher education reformbut the teachers regret this decision.
“The announcements about technology in the sixth grade are a (new) sleight of hand that reveals the ministry’s real concerns about the risk of university disorganization,” denounces Sophie Vénétitay, general secretary of the secondary teachers’ union Snes-FSU.
However, the ministry denied the notion of suppressing technology in 6. “Science and technology education is being redesigned,” he told the echoesafter which the lessons in this subject must be “reinforced” from the 5th grade.
At the beginning of January, the Ministry of National Education presented the first school reform measures, including a childcare hour and a compulsory “homework done” program in the 6th grade.
Fix the shortage of technology teachers?
The end of the tech in the 6th grade has the ranks of teachers concerned, who fear a “precedent” and denounce a “form of renunciation” on the part of the SNES FSU, in the columns of the Figaro.
“The 6th deprived of tech in college starting September 2023 to learn to read and count properly…Can’t wait to find her at the top of Cycle 4.” ,” one tech teacher ironically pointed out on Twitter.
If the reason for the removal of technology in the 6th instead of another subject was not given by the ministry, some teachers’ unions suggest a possible explanation.
“We must stop making pseudopedagogical arguments! We know that the ministry is trying to solve its problems with the recruitment of techno teachers in this way,” Jean-Rémi Girard is particularly annoyed at the Union of Education Staff national (Snalc) in Le figaro.
According to Pap Ndiaye, the introduction of a weekly support lesson in French or mathematics must apply to all sixth graders “in small groups, depending on their level”. A way to consolidate basic knowledge, while 27% of students do not have the expected level in French and almost a third in mathematicsaccording to the last national assessments conducted at the beginning of the 6th grade.
