MNA for Longueuil–Saint-Hubert Denis Trudel pleads for the beginning of a collective reflection on the development of the Pratt & Whitney country enclosed in what Longueuil calls the “Roland-Therrien Pole”. He dreams of an eco-neighborhood for this sector, developed and managed by a non-profit organization that brings together diverse community stakeholders.

“My dream today is that we will be able to bring together under an ecological framework all the driving forces who care about housing, economic development and social development, which the 21 Denis Trudel, in an open letter.

This approximately 132,000 m2 property is located between Rue Saint-Charles Est, Rue d’Auvergne and Rue du Parc-Industriel.
Such an eco-district would combine parks, shops, places of creation, community spaces for young companies and a diverse range of affordable, private, cooperative and social housing.

“The mobilization of everyone involved will be the cornerstone for the success of such a project,” explains Mr. Trudel.

The MEP believes that this mobilization should result in the creation of an NPO that would be responsible for managing the country’s transformation.

He believes Longueuil could follow the lead of what Société de Développement Angus has been doing in the Canadian Pacific vacant lots in the Rosemont-la-Petit-Patrie neighborhood of Montreal.

“Longueuil is capable of great things and I believe in all of us to take responsibility for development together, in line with the needs of our community,” he says. It is time to turn our collective dreams and aspirations into reality.”

Denis Trudel will be on tour to meet several key players in the realization of such an eco-district.

For initial meetings, he is targeting the Chamber of Commerce, the Community Development Corporation, housing associations, Développement économique Longueuil, the City of Longueuil, provincial elected officials and the owner of this space, Pratt & Whitney Canada.

“If we think together about a common vision, and why not with the contribution of the Office for Public Participation of the City of Longueuil, we have all the prerequisites to make such a project a success,” he enthuses.

Remember that in 2017 the city of Longueuil developed a special urban planning program for the Roland-Therrien hub that goes beyond the company’s property. According to the map on the city’s website, the land belongs to the municipality.

Furthermore, in June 2020, Longueuil City Council had approved Groupe MACH’s pledge to acquire land on rue Bord-de-l’Eau Est.

The developer stated at the time that the $160 million project would entail building just over 56,000 square feet of residential towers with approximately 630 units, including 10% social and affordable housing and 10% three-bedroom or more housing .

Mr. Trudel’s vision for Pratt & Whitney’s country is not at odds with the PPU, assures Jean-Sébastien Talbot, Denis Trudel’s political attaché.

“The aim is to restart the mobilization and that the project leader is not disadvantaged. Yes, the private sector will make a profit, but it would be a collective good,” he argues.

“Because there is a difference between political announcements and the reality on the ground,” adds Mr Talbot.
