The Sabers said in the third half that the huge right winger had retired to the dressing room with an upper body injury, without specifying if it was the same illness that forced him to miss Monday’s practice session.
That means Thompson could miss the All-Star Game this weekend, he’s Buffalo’s only representative. The 25-year-old American is having a dream season with 68 points in 50 games.
Jesperi Kotkaniemi was the spark plug for the Hurricanes with two assists. The former Montreal Canadiens were involved in first-half goals from Stefan Noesen and Brent Burns. Back to the keeper, the Finn served a superb blind pass to the tall defender who was assisting the attack.
Sebastian Aho, Derek Stepan and Jordan Martinook also shook the ropes for Carolina while Alex Tuch supplied a wrist shot to the Sabers.
The “Canes” reach the All-Star Game break on a seven-game winning streak. They remain firmly anchored at number one in the metropolitan area with 76 points.
