The report, released by the Equity Association, includes all vehicle thefts nationwide in 2021.
In Canada, the most frequently stolen vehicle is the Honda CR-V with 4117 thefts.
It’s a vehicle that can be serviced anywhere in the world, there’s a demand for it, there’s a lot
says Brian Gast, vice president of Investigative Services at Equity.
The Lexus RX series is the second most popular model among thieves with 2202 thefts, followed by the Ford F150 series with 1182 thefts. Five of the most commonly stolen vehicles are sport utility vehicles (SUVs).
A flight in less than 30 seconds
According to Brian Gast, thieves can break into cars by intercepting the locking signal sent by the key fob, which can take less than 30 seconds. You can also manually break into the vehicle and connect to the car’s diagnostic port to reprogram the fob and start the vehicle.
They break into the vehicle, they have a computer controlled device that they hook up to [le port de diagnostique] and they are able to reprogram a key for that vehicle. It’s what you would do at a retailer, but they also have the technology to do it
he explains.
Brian Gast recommends deterring thieves from intercepting the lock signal by keeping the key in a location such as a pocket or box that prevents radio frequency transmission.
He also recommends not leaving the key in the front door.
” As manufacturers improve their vehicle protection, criminals improve it [leurs techniques]. »
Most stolen vehicles in Alberta
In Alberta, pickups are 9 of the top 10 most stolen vehicles.
The Ford F350 series models from 1997 to 2007 are the most frequently stolen vehicles with 220 thefts.
According to Brian Gast, these numbers can be explained by the heavy presence of vans in the province. He specifies that the models before 2008 are easier to fly because they don’t require any special technique.
