The Raptors slow down Luka Doncic enough

It’s almost impossible to give Luka Doncic nothing this season in the NBA, but the Toronto Raptors did an excellent job of stopping him from defeating the Dallas Mavericks 105-in-100 at Scotiabank Arena on Saturday.

Doncic, holder of the best points average per game (34.0) at the Silver Circuit before facing the league’s only Canadian team, made just eight of his 15 shots and converted six of his nine franc shots for 24 points. With seven rebounds and eight assists, he still ended the duel at the top of his team’s scorers.

The Raptors, on the other hand, were recovering from a slow start to the game that saw them trail 14 points in the opening minutes. They recovered and took the lead in the second quarter, which they held for most of the rest of the game. They accomplished this by scoring seven points more than their rivals in the second quarter and six more on their return to the floor in the third quarter.

Fred VanVleet and OG Anunoby did a great job of animate the winners’ attack in the absence of some of the team’s other stars like Scottie Barnes and Pascal Siakam. The two finished the game with 26 points. VanVleet also added six rebounds and seven assists while his accomplice had nine rebounds and two assists.

Head coach Nick Nurse also gave Quebecer Chris Boucher a dominating offensive role. In 36 minutes and 4 seconds, the 6’9″ giant converted 10 of his 19 shots and two of his five free throws, for 22 points, his highest total since the start of the season. He also added 13 rebounds to his record.

For his part, Montreal’s Khem Birch added six points in just over 12 minutes on the floor.

The Raptors are now preparing to host the Cleveland Cavaliers on Monday.
