POLITICS. While there is no regulatory or legal framework obliging political parties to represent an equal number of women and men, the parties have given themselves guidelines to allow for greater representation of women.
“Neither in Quebec nor in Canada there are no rules, quotas for representation of women, female candidates. Parties face no penalties for failing to submit a balanced list. […] In some proportional systems working by list, you can ensure parity by having alternation. […] At the moment it is a question of the will of the political parties or a media and social situation,” explained Joanie Bouchard, professor in the Faculty of Letters and Humanities in Applied Politics at Sherbrooke University.
Quebec Solidaire (QS)
Both regionally and nationally, QS follows a parity policy: 50% of the candidates must be female in each region and nationally. According to QS, the party statutes also stipulate that the district associations must work together to ensure this parity. Currently, the party has four candidates (Côte-du-Sud, Bellechasse, Beauce-Nord and Beauce-Sud) and three candidates (Lévis, Chutes-de-la-Chaudière and Lotbinière-Frontenac) in the seven sessions of Chaudière-Appalaches. ).
Quebec Conservative Party (PCQ)
There is no parity policy in effect. The aim of political education is to find the best possible person in each constituency, regardless of gender. In Chaudière-Appalaches, the candidate team has only one woman: Karine Laflamme in Lévis.
Future Quebec Coalition (CAQ)
The party fielded 69 provincial candidates from 125 constituencies. Without having any particular policy, the CAQ and its leader demonstrate a desire to recruit as many women as possible, they say. In Chaudière-Appalaches there are four candidates (Beauce-Nord, Beauce-Sud, Côte-du-Sud and Lévis) and three candidates (Bellechasse, Chutes-de-la-Chaudière and Lotbinière-Frontenac).
Parti Quebecois (PQ)
It is said to have introduced the objective of reaching the parity zone (40% to 60%) in the formation’s statutes at a previous congress. It should also be remembered that the first female PM wore the colors of the PQ. In the region, the PQ presents five men (Beauce-Sud, Bellechasse, Côte-du-Sud, Chutes-de-la-Chaudière and Lévis) and two women (Beauce-Nord and Lotbinière-Frontenac).
Quebec Liberal Party (PLQ)
The PLQ is reminded that the party currently has the only female campaign manager and that “it is essential to increase the number of women in provincial politics”. For this reason, they have multiplied their efforts to present candidates in all regions of the province. In addition, the party adds that reaching the parity zone is an “essential” goal. At the provincial level, the number of female candidates is in parity (41.6%), but in Chaudière-Appalaches there is only one candidate, Ouafa Oueslati, in Chutes-de-la-Boiler.
