There are times when we try to find an eloquent way to say things, but there is only one way to say it clearly. The Carolina Panthers are the most corrupt organization in the NFL.
This week, the team announced that quarterback Bryce Young, the first overall pick in last year’s draft, would be benched, ending his reign of 18 short games, surpassing the immortal JaMarcus Russell’s record for the first quarterback to play just 25 games with the Raiders.
Let’s be clear: The Panthers made the right decision. Young is small, far too frail, and despite the offensive improvements made in the offseason, he is far from being able to perform as an NFL quarterback.
He seems to see absolutely nothing behind his line of attack and quickly becomes frightened when his protective pouch explodes.
ESPN published a very interesting statistic in the case of Young and the smaller quarterbacks. Since 1970, 178 quarterbacks have started at least 50 games in the NFL and only four of them were under 6 feet tall.
Of all of them, only Russell Wilson has had a really good career, while Kyler Murray is also having a good time with the Cardinals.
A bad choice from the start
The Panthers are therefore not ridiculous for benching Young, but for selecting him in the first place and surrounding him poorly. They were looking for trouble from the start. Despite Young’s successful college career at Alabama, the NFL is a different beast.
It is often said that the success of an organization starts at the top of the pyramid. The Panthers are owned by David Tepper, a billionaire who, like others before him, believed that his business successes would translate into the football business.
With the first pick in 2023, former head coach Frank Reich and his football men had their sights set on CJ Stroud, who has taken the Houston Texans to a new level.
But the Big Boss saw Young in his soup and put his fist on the table.
A series of errors
The Panthers are the architects of their misfortune because they big boss has his nose stuck everywhere without having the skills in the football department. He fired Reich last year after just 11 games as coach, the shortest tenure of a Pilot in 45 years.
The Panthers have had ten coaches since their inception in 1995. Tepper bought the team in 2018 and was behind the firing and hiring of seven of them. Under his reign, two coaches did not finish their first season. Incidentally, no team in the league has won fewer games than the Panthers since 2018 because this organization has become a sad revolving door comedy.
In short, Young is a failure and looks to be difficult to recover from. It shouldn’t be a surprise if the Panthers trade him elsewhere in the coming months. You never know, some quarterbacks have found a second wind elsewhere.
New head coach Dave Canales will have to turn to veteran Andy Dalton to avoid losing his locker room, but we must remember that Young was essentially put in an impossible position. Whoever follows next year will also find themselves in this dysfunctional environment.
A word about the game
A quick word on Thursday night’s Patriots-Jets matchup. Both teams are very conservative and the Patriots have always had a knack for beating the Jets who have been without a quarterback for too long. Aaron Rodgers is starting to get into his stride, but the Jets defense will have to be wary of the Patriots’ ground game.
MY PREDICTION: Patriots 10 Jets 16
IN THE WORLD OF THE NFL…
Free hot dogs in Atlanta!
The Atlanta Falcons already don’t sell food at high prices at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, but on Sunday night, for the game against the Chiefs, it will be free! Well, not everything, but each spectator will be treated to two hot dogs, chips and a soft drink with a souvenir glass on the arm of the owner, Arthur Blank. Hot dogs usually sell for $2 and last season we sold 82,000. By Sunday, 100,000 had already been ordered!
It’s falling like flies
At the beginning of the season, several key players were lost in action. The 49ers will be without wide receiver Deebo Samuel for at least two weeks due to a calf injury. He is a key player that the defense always keeps an eye on. The Chiefs will also be without running back Isiah Pacheco for six to eight weeks due to a broken fibula. Another receiver, AJ Brown of the Eagles, is dealing with a hamstring injury.
A ghost
To temporarily replace Isiah Pacheco, the Chiefs brought in an old flame, Kareem Hunt. The latter had a monstrous season with the Chiefs as a rookie in 2017, but off-field incidents forced him out of Kansas City in 2018. Since then, he has never gained more than 841 rushing yards in a single season in Cleveland, but he shared the backfield. He knows Andy Reid’s offensive system well.
