OTTAWA — The Ottawa-area’s largest school board has ruled that wearing a mask will not be mandatory in class this winter.
The Ottawa-Carleton School Board announced Thursday night that it had defeated a resolution calling for the return of mandatory mask-wearing by staff and students in schools.
In a message published on Twitter, the council is urging the community to follow Ottawa Public Health recommendations, including wearing a mask in indoor public places.
The council practically met on Thursday night, two days after an extraordinary public gathering got lined up when protesters burst in and loudly disrupted talks.
Earlier this week, the Hamilton-Wentworth school board also decided against a renewed requirement to wear masks while passing a resolution urging staff and students to wear them indoors voluntarily.
Ontario Secretary of Education Stephen Lecce says the government will respect parents’ decision and investments have been made to improve ventilation in all schools.
