The organization wants the province to ban flavored e-cigarette cartridges

The Manitoba Lung Association hopes the province will follow Quebec’s lead and ban flavored e-cigarette cartridges.

Flavored vaping products are often presented in colorful cartridges to entice young users to try the different flavors.

However, according to the Manitoba Lung Association, these products are hazardous to health

The dangers posed by vaping and smoking overwhelm the lungs’ prevention and protective mechanisms. Once the damage is done, there is no turning back. The lungs don’t repair themselvessays Neil Johnston, president of the Manitoba Lung Association.

The latter indicates that it is important that Manitoba take action to ban the sale of these flavored cartridges.

If we do this, the legislation may have an impact on the number of young people using these products.he said, All levels of government must take different approaches as part of their oversight to ensure that it is regulated and that these rules are applied.

Health experts are also concerned about the long-term consequences of vaping.

Some believe that inhaling these chemicals can cause severe lung irritation.

This is the case of assistant professor in the Department of Physiology and Pathophysiology at the University of Manitoba, Chris Pascoe, who says he is very concerned about the presence of certain molecules in products.

Many of these molecules are known as irritants. They irritate the respiratory tract, nose and nasal passages. It is therefore no exaggeration to say that continued exposure to these substances would be irritating.

A widespread phenomenon among young people

According to a study conducted by Statistics Canada in 2022, 30% of Canadians aged 15 to 19 admit they have tried vaping.

Emma Riddel, a student at the University of Saint-Boniface, says this is a common phenomenon among young people.

It’s really people my age or younger who use it. I’m 23 and I know people have been using them for years. They started in secondary school.

To date, no measures have been proposed to change e-cigarette legislation in Manitoba.

The legal minimum age to purchase flavored vaping products remains 18.
