Pierre Reid, who wanted to remain at the helm of Élections Québec, has to leave his seat for good.
The Legault government has found a replacement for him. Jean-François Blanchet has been appointed Chief Electoral Officer (DGE) of Quebec. He will serve for the next seven years.
It was Minister for Democratic Institutions, Jean-François Roberge, who made the announcement at the National Assembly on Friday. Parliament voted in favor of Mr Blanchet’s candidacy this morning. The support of two-thirds of the deputies was required.
Mr. Blanchet has worked for Elections Québec since 1989. Prior to his appointment, he worked as an assistant to the chairman and as head of electoral operations.
He succeeds Pierre Reid, who declared at the beginning of the last election campaign that he wanted a second mandate.
Appointed in 2015, Mr Reid notably contributed to the recent revision of the electoral map that led to the creation of the Ridings of Prévost in the Laurentians and Plaines in Lanaudière in the 2018 general election.
In return, the counties of Mount Royal and Outremont, and those of Laviolette and Saint-Maurice, had been merged. Sixteen other constituencies had changed their boundaries.
