The question of Cole Caufield’s next contract is probably the most important thing the Canadian management has to deal with at the moment.
During his segment with Jean-Charles Lajoie on Thursday, Renaud Lavoie said Caufield’s fate was directly linked to that of Anaheim Ducks’ Trevor Zegras.
“What is the connection between the two? They have the same agent, Pat Brisson, and both are looking for a new contract. I have the impression that a connection must be made between the two. Will future contracts be similar? It’s good that Pat Brisson is the agent for both players. I have a feeling that maybe it’s best to wait as long as possible, maybe even until the end of the season.
The journalist from the TVA Sports channel had the opportunity to speak to Brisson in the last few hours. The latter informed him about the ongoing talks.
“Talks between Pat Brisson and Kent Hughes have ‘begun’. Will we let the time pass to see what will happen to Zegras? Pat Brisson told me today that he is in constant contact with Pat Verbeek but negotiations have not yet started. They will start when the time is right.”
Renaud Lavoie also believes that even if Kent Hughes and Jeff Gorton have an advantage in getting this matter done as soon as possible, the Caufield clan may not agree.
“On the Habs’ side, it’s probably better the sooner you get that deal done. I can’t wait to see what happens next and how Pat Brisson will take care of this file. Pat is a very good agent, probably one of the best in the NHL. What’s been circulating in the NHL is that the two players are linked on the side of their contract. I think the next few weeks will be very interesting.”
