The federal government monitors the Prigozhin uprising in Russia

OTTAWA – The Canadian government promises to keep an eye on the chaotic situation in Russia, where the head of the armed paramilitary group Wagner, Evgueni Prigojine, sent his troops against Moscow before turning them back.

Global Affairs Canada, which previously advised Canadians not to travel to Russia after Ukraine’s invasion, said there was “a risk of further unrest across the country.”

“Security restrictions, including movement restrictions, have been put in place in some areas, including Moscow,” said a travel advisory published on the Global Affairs website on Saturday.

This communication came before Prigozhin’s announcement that he would abandon his advance on Moscow. He decided to turn back to avoid a bloodbath, in his opinion.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has announced an Incident Response Group meeting to review the situation in Russia.

Mr. Trudeau met with Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland, Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly, Defense Minister Anita Anand, President of the King’s Privy Council for Canada and Minister for Emergency Preparedness. Bill Blair, Secretary of Public Safety Marco Mendicino and senior government officials.

According to Trudeau’s office, the Incident Response Group has provided an update on the latest news from Russia. In particular, ongoing coordination efforts with international partners have been discussed and officials are assessing the impact of the situation on Canadians and Canadian personnel.

“The panel has agreed to continue to monitor the situation and work closely with allies and partners,” Alison Murphy, the Prime Minister’s press secretary, said in a written statement.

Trudeau said on Twitter that Canada is in touch with its allies. “We will continue to monitor the situation closely,” he said.

Earlier on, Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly wrote on Twitter that she and her G7 counterparts “met to discuss events in Russia.” She did not provide any further information on the subject.

The US State Department and the German Foreign Ministry gave little information on the discussion, in which the EU foreign policy representative also took part.

The United States reiterated the country’s support for Ukraine. The Foreign Secretary continues to coordinate with his allies.

The President and CEO of the Congress of Ukrainian Canadians recalled that Russia continued its war effort despite the ongoing unrest.

“Now is the time for Canada and its allies to provide all the weapons Ukraine needs to defeat Russia,” Ihor Michalchyshyn said. Ukrainians need what they need to win and they will win.”
