Mandate for an indefinite general strike
Unions and the Quebec government cannot find common ground after months of discussions.
Leaders of the all-union Public Sector Common Front, which is negotiating on behalf of 420,000 workers, therefore decided to meet with its members across the province to obtain a mandate for an indefinite general strike. General meetings and votes must take place by October 13th.
The mandate that the Common Front wants to propose to its members includes some measures before the deployment of a general strike. Strike days or individual or collective strike sequences are also part of the arsenal offered to union members. However, the Common Front rules out strikes that would only affect one sector at a time.
The Legault government is running out of time. If it wants to become an employer of choice, it needs to walk its talk. The workers are fed up with setbacks and impoverishment. The crisis in our public networks requires a serious step forward to improve workers’ wages and working conditions. If the government continues to act hesitantly, it will have a colorful autumn ahead
